Nikon Coolpix S510 - Overview

Nikon Coolpix S510 is a new compact digital camera with 8-megapixel CCD, 3x optical zoom lens, and of course optical image stabilization.

Nikon is well known for the special features that it equips its digital cameras with and S510 is not at all different in this respect. Thus, Nikon Coolpix S510 has many useful features, such as Face-Priority AF (automatically focuses on faces), Best Shot Selector mode (the camera takes a series of pictures and selects the one with best quality, deleting the rest), Red-Eye Fix (finds red eyes in photos and eliminates this effect automatically) and D-Lighting which enhances darker images so as to improve shadow detail.

Nikon Coolpix S510 is a really compact digital camera which means that you can take it with you everywhere and it will always fit to your coat pocket/schoolbag/handbag. It is also surprisingly quick for this class of digital cameras – it is ready to take photos as soon as just two seconds from turning it on. Moreover, if you take photos with flash it takes only slightly less than 6 second to recharge the flash, so it too is rather quick. As S510 is a small camera all the controls are within the reach of your thumb so you can take really great photos even using only one hand.

Coolpix S510 has an abundance of record modes including Auto, Scene modes, Movie, Hi ISO, Voice Memo so it enables taking photos in all circumstances and in all weather conditions. Additionally, the Voice Memo mode enables you to record short memos so that you do not forget about any errands. The Hi ISO mode is very useful for taking photos in dark places if you do not want (or cannot) use the flash. What is important is the fact that even when you take photos with manually set high ISO the photos will be no pixel binning.

Nikon Coolpix S510 is equipped with 52MB of internal memory so bearing in mind that photos in the best resolution take about 1,9MB to 2,6MB (depending on the photographed subject) you can store up to 20 Photos in the camera itself, without the use of any additional memory card (it works with SD and SDHC cards). It also has a 2,5-inch LCD so you can browse and edit you photos with ease.

Apart from the above mentioned advantages of this digital camera Coolpix S510 has also some minor drawbacks in that it takes somewhat soft images. Moreover, its USB 1.1 connection is not the fastest.. Yet, all in all Nikon Coolpix S510 is a very good digital camera, especially considering its reasonable price - $279.95.
